As Helen points out FreeBMD is independant of Ancestory. You can go directly to their site and they will tell you how far they have reached with the transcription and which areas are their priorities. It is a voluntary project and they always need volunteers. There are seperate County BMD projects in many areas that are transcribing the local indexes - just bear in mind that the references returned are the local index not the national one but they may have somethimg FreeBMD doesn't yet. Anybody can get involved on-line with these projects. The more who do the quicker they will be completed and the more accurate the results will be. There is loads on FreeBMD that will answer all your questions.

Ancestry have not transcribed anything on Freebmd. They have just made the Freebmd databases available on the site. Freebmd did the transcribing. Currently the Freebmd transcriptions stop at around 1910-12, so your death search will be after that. You could try a National Burial Index search to narrow it down, but this isn't comprehensive either.

As the downloading of each image takes a while, I tend to have two sessions going (maybe 5 years apart) - so that I can be downloading one while I am looking at the other. The total work for me is the same but I spend less time waiting, so it can be quite a bit faster. I've got broadband - so it must be terrible without it. Jim

If it's later than the dates which Ancestry have indexed on FreeBMD then it's a jolly trawl quarter by quarter (and remember to record which quarters you've done!). Thank goodness most of the names I've had to do this with aren't Smiths. Some folk subscribe to other sites which have more comprehensive search features. John

Sheila I use ancestry, quick search using FreeBMD, then if no use try trawling. Obviously it is easier if spouse is know, approx year of marriage, and location. Keith

Can't help but notice how quickly people seem to find things on here, so question for you. If I am looking for a death which may have occurred between, say 1935 and 1951, is there a quick way to do this or must I trawl through every quarter from March 1935 until I find him? I use Ancestry - are other people using something else? Sheila
