The IGI is a bit of a minefield it contains parish records but also submitted entries which should be treated with caution. It might be easier to google, hughwallis, this site will give parish records only. EG Meesden C072672 1737-1810 M072671 1813-1837 M072672 1738-1753 You can access via hughwallis or on IGI put the numbers,one batch at a time in the 'batch no'box with the surname only. If you find someone being christened, make a note of their parents. Enter their first names in the father/mother boxes with just a surname and you will get their siblings.Although sometimes there might be more than one couple with same names. Hi again Jim Thanks, I thought Richard and Thomas had to be brothers. I really need to be able to do these searches myself. I had another go at using the IGI site myself during the last week. I found a tutorial on there which I followed, but to my eternal shame I still haven't mastered it because for every name I put in I got no results. I'm feeling very thick - any tips? Hi Jim Having thought about what you have told me - may I trouble you for a little bit more information about William Brooks parents Thomas Brooks and Elizabeth Flack? This is the second time I've come across Flack in the last week (another big Meesden family). Also I'm trying to establish a link between (not very successfully) between Thomas Brooks and a Richard Brooks. I don't have much information for Richard Brooks other than he was born in Meesden in abt.1799 and he married an Eleanor Rumble also born abt.1799. Any pointers would be much appreciated Lyndsey

Thanks everyone William is not on the 1861 census as by then he had emigrated to Australia! A kind GR member put me onto the passenger list of the Violet which sailed from Southampton in 1855. His age was given as 25 and in order to check that he is who I think he is on the census I really needed to know his birth year. Yes, this is 'my' William and this is the start of a brand new branch! Could someone take a look at the 1851 census for William Brooks, born Meesden in Hertfordshire. He is with his parents Thomas & Charlotte Brooks (Thomas is an Ag. Lab). He has two brothers Richard and Allan(?) I cannot read William's age - can someone please help me out with this? Many thanks Lyndsey
