Keith Franklin has very kindly found the following entry from the 1861 census which I think is for my GGG Grandfather. Name: Thomas Wheeler Age: 27 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1834 Relation: Crime Prisn Gender: Male Where born: Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England Civil parish: North Hamlet Ecclesiastical parish: Gloucester County/Island: Gloucestershire Country: England Registration district: Gloucester Sub-registration district: Kingsholm ED, institution, or vessel: County Prison Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 1 Does anyone know how I can find out any more detail from the prison record? Or alternatively can anyone find any other records for a Thomas Wheeler (born about 1864), occupation Stonemason, from 1861 onwards? Thanks Chris

Hi Chris...if you google Gloucestershire Archives you will find a website for them with their email address...they may hold the prison records. I emailed Manchester Archives a while back regarding a prison record and I received a wonderful response! I hope you are as lucky. Linda

Re Thomas Wheeler being in prison in 1861...... I think the following could be his wife, Jane Wheeler in the workhouse in 1861 which would presumably add more weight to Thomas being in prison at that time? Jane's year of birth, occupation and the location all tie up. She is on 1871 census in Cheltenham, shown as wife (but Thomas not there) she is 44 (which would mean she was born in 1827) and her occupation is Dressmaker so it all adds up. Do people agree? 1861: District Union Workhouse - Cheltenham J W abt 1827 Upton St Leonard, Gloucestershire, England Inmate Cheltenham Gloucestershire (married - Dressmakers Assistant) J W abt 1852 Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England Inmate Cheltenham Gloucestershire (Scholar) Any tips on getting access to workhouse records? Thanks Chris

Records for Gloucester prisson are online at Gloucester record office. There are several entries for Thomas Wheeler. I asked them to copy a document for me and they only charged 50p a page plus postage. It is also worth typing his name into the A2A (access to archives) site in case the quarter session report shows up Anne
