Bingo!! Thanks Richard - I hadn't ticked the yes box - sorry for being so thick!

Two possible reasons why the website is asking for the exact date: (1) you have not checked the Yes box where it asks if the GRO index is known (2) the marriage occurred in the past 50 years. If 1, then that's easily fixed, by checking the right box. If 2, then you can't apply online without the exact date - you have to write or phone the GRO. Richard

I know Looby - that's what I can't understand. I'm wondering if I've somehow got into the wrong section or something, but can't for the life of me see where. It's also quoting the price at £10 instead of £7. Am I going mad??!

Vicky Are you sure you need the exact date, this is not normally the case with GRO - I would logout and try again. Hope you get it sorted Looby

Yes, I could do that thanks - it's just frustrating because I did one this way last week and now I can't see how to do it.

Never come across it asking for so much information. Is the marriage outside of London? If so it might be worth going through the local records office - supply them with names, year and quarter and the reference points you want checking and send a cheque for £7 - that way if it doesn't meet the specified criteria they return your cheque and you dont have to pay the £3 that you would get charged if you went through the GRO.

Can someone help please? I want to order a marriage certificate from the GRO using reference checking. I have done this before, but now I don't seem to be getting the option of using reference checking. Also, it won't let me proceed without the exact date of the marriage, which I don't know; only quarter and year from the indexes. What am I doing wrong?
