I've had a similar thing today. Got my great grandfathers birth cert from 1850. His mother is the informant & in place of a signature it says X The Mark of Elizabeth Fletcher Mother. |

Hi Carol, just had to say about the cross for names. Dont be sad, it wasnt at all unusual for people of that era not to be able to read or write so they wouldnt have been social outcasts and necessarily unhappy in their lives. In years to come people might be upset for us because we have to put petrol in our cars and not just transport ourselves in time machines? lol. Progress honey, progress. Suzanne XXX (Hug) |

Genuki has this on the Warrington page St Alban, Bewsey St, Roman Catholic Sadly, Genuki don't have info and ask for others to send photos or provide further material! As they were of Irish descent, this fits in. As for tracing further back in Ireland, put 'Irish' or 'Ireland' into the search box at the top of this message board and you will see there are lots of threads about this topic, some of which may have some useful information for you. |

ok, questions first... i have just recieved my gt gt grandads marriage cert from 1855. both parents were down as deceased and both were farmers. it doesnt give any places of birth but as the children getting married were born in ireland i would presume its a safe bet to think they were also from there! one of the dads michael lyons i am assuming he was born early 1800's as his son edward was 22 when he got married in 1855. would i be right to go along these lines? im hoping to try and find some trace of both dads in ireland but im not sure where to look now? ( brides dad was william lesley.) also, im trying to locate the church where they were married. ive tried googling but with no luck. it was 'st albans chapel warrington' wondered if anyone knew where i could find info or pics? anyway, the thing that made me sad was i noticed the bride and the two witnesses had both put 'x' as their mark-thats the first time i had come across it! silly i know! thanx carolexx |
