Hi - I am looking for some help in establishing whether my relative (great grandfather) took part in the First World War - my Dad cant remember if he did, but thought that potentially he didnt as he worked for teh Post Office in Edinburgh (why this would guarantee him exemption I dont know). I dont know where to start to find out whether he was in the war in the first place so any tips would be gratefully received.

Have a look on the National Archives Documents Online, which has the WW1 medal index cards available to download (£.3.50 for a set of six) http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp It is primarily the England / Wales archives but the medal cards definitely cover Scotland as well.
