I have a relative - Joseph James born in 1841 - whose birthplace is listed as West Butterwick, Lincolnshire in the censuses (censi?) from 1871 - 1901. However, I cannot find him in 1851 or 1861. The nearest I can find is a Joseph James whose birthplace is North Kelsey. Is there a possibility that they are the same? |

Hi John Afraid that West Butterwick and North Kelsey are not that close to each other. Genuki is really good for finding out more about villages in Lincolnshire. I have found a Joseph James in the workhouse in Gainsborough in 1851 aged 13 born Butterwick. Looks like he could be yours. I'll go and look in 1861. Jenny |

Hello John having lived in lincolnshire all my life i can honestly say they are not the same place. North Kelsey is about 4 miles from Brigg, and West Butterwick is nearer to Scunthorpe. Sorry about that To add to what jenny said - west butterwick is on the River Trent - so Gainsborough could be a possiblity. |

Hi John Found him in 1861 aged 22, and engine cleaner, born West Butterwick living in Barrow on Humber. This fits in with his occupation on the 1871 census. Sure he's your man! Jenny |

Thanks to everyone for their help as well as to Kat who emailed me. I have found my man right back to 1841. There was a confusion with DOB (funny how that happens) and I had not cast my net wide enough. Once again, I appreciate the help and the responses. ps. Jenny is right ..... he is my man ... or rather my Gt Gt Grandfather. ;-) |
