could it be possible that only a middle name appears on a census. Person i am looking for is Henry edward, how ever his parents appear on the 1881 census with son Edward could this be the same person? Julie

I have found the name on the census is usually the name by which their family knew them. In one case the son inherited the father's names and was known by the second name to avoid confusion. Certainly my mother in law is always known by her second name - she dislikes the first!! Good Luck Kay

I have an Edward Henry born in South Wales and named after his father. By the following census he is shown as Henry ( father is Edward) and the family has moved to Herefordshire. Unfortunately they left their memory behind and say that he was born in Herefordshire. I have spent hours searching parish records etc. and I'm sure he's the same person as the ages match, no other Henry has been found being born and no Edward dying in either place or anywhere else. The one name study researcher found the same. At marriage E.H. is back to Edward Henry son of Edward Henry. As said above, I think the name change is to prevent confusion within the family....... but doesn't help us. Gwyn

Almost all of my father's aunts and uncles appear on the census under their second forenames. Reg
