I'm tracing the Salisbury line of the family and have received a birth certificate for Frederic who was born Dec 1849. There is no fathers name on the cert only the mother Jane Salisbury. On the 1851 census Frederic is shown as being with Aunt and Uncle and their family but not Frederic's mother. how or where can I find out more about Jane Salisbury? Thanks for you help Nicola ******************************UPDATE******************************** I've received the marriage cert of Frederick Salisbury. His birth cert says the mother is Jane Salisbury and no father. His marriage cert says his father is John Salisbury. Was not expecting this at all. Why would a fathers name of John Salisbury be on there when his mothers name is Salisbury (maiden name) and no father is on the birth cert. I know I def. have the correct person for marriage. Can anybody help? Thanks

Did Jane register the birth? I'm just thinking that if it is someone else it might make it easier to trace her in the 1841, she might be with the informant or living near them. It would mean cross checking the informant and Jane in the 1841. If Jane registered the birth I think it will be difficult to establish which Jane is yours :( Chris **** Just had another thought***** Aunt and Uncle......Jane's sister or brother?? They could be used as a check point too :))

Is it not worth going down the Aunt and Uncle route? If you can find Jane connected with them in 1841 then it could help. How old are the aunt & uncle and could they be not married yet in 1841? And is it the aunt or the uncle who is the connection to Jane?

Where was he in 1861? Sometimes the stay with relatives is a temporary arrangement. Who was a witness when he married, was there a Jane ? I managed to catch up with one of mine that way, by tracking back and finding a marriage before the child's wedding. Gwyn

Hi, thanks for your replies. I've thought about the aunt/uncle route. The surnames there are Mayton so I'm guessing that the wife Ellen Mayton may have been a Salisbury (maiden name). In 1851 their eldest child was 15, so if they were married before the birth of their first born, their marriage would have taken place before 1837, so I can't order a cert. Any more ideas? Thanks

LOL Chris, great minds sure do... Well there is always the birth certs of their younger children you could order to find out if she was a Salisbury.... I've searched the IGI and there are no Ellen Sailsbury marriages to a Mayton down.

Have you tried the IGI for Jane's baptism? It might be a long trawl.....But at least you have the sister's forename too which would make a match easier :) I would start with the area the uncle and aunt lived in then work outwards. Of course Jane and sister might not have been baptised :((( Chris

Guess who I found mistranscribed in 1841.... Ellen Mealor abt 1808 Cheshire, England Woodchurch Cheshire James Mealor abt 1811 Cheshire, England Woodchurch Cheshire James Mealor abt 1838 Cheshire, England Woodchurch Cheshire Mary Mealor abt 1836 Cheshire, England Woodchurch Cheshire Jane Salsbury abt 1831 Woodchurch Cheshire (The Maytons are Maylors in 1851 from a quick check of the image and on 1841 are actually spelt Mealor on the image) Jane was not born in county.

Wow, you are just brilliant Alexandra. I hadn't been able to find Frederick anywhere in 1861 and 1871. He does reappear in 1881 and married to Annie which is where I can follow him and this fits. On his marriage cert. it does say Salisbury. I'll have to check the witnessess. So all your findings fit in with this story. The only thing now I suppose is to try and find what happened to Jane. many many thanks for all your help, you are a star!! Nicola xx

Glad I could help. Its common for people to be adopted/fostered and go under a different surname for the majority of censuses - but they know their real surname and marry as that. I have a few instances of that in my tree - often where a widowed mother has remarried. I did have a look at Salisbury/Salsbury BMD for the Wirral area but there weren't any deaths or marriages for a Jane. It may be that she died but perhaps her death hasn't been transcribed yet - or surname mistranscribed. I cannot find a likely suspect for her in 1851 or later. The others just dont really fit, different surnames etc. As Jane was not born in county in 1841 - it actually looks like she has the word 'inmate' written next to her details but crossed out. Someone might do better at deciphering it. Its possible Jane was a relative of James's as James was younger than Ellen and Jane was only down as being 10 in 1841. Its also possible she was no relation at all and just a poor orphan girl that they took in and looked after - who then went and got pregnant but then died and they looked after her son as their own. Who knows! Did Frederick give a father's name on his marriage cert? And yes, would be interesting to see who the witnesses were. Sometimes you just need to think a bit laterally. I have a 3x great grandmother Jane Drake and I am a bit stuck with her as in 1841 she is with a Jebson family, and in 1851 she is with another Jebson relation - who was married and surname was Knott. She was down as niece in 1851 - so I'm guessing that the Jebson she was with in 1841 was an uncle. She gave her fathers name as John Drake when she married, but she was born pre 1837. I haven't had much luck finding a baptism on the IGI for her. I have an inkling that her mothers maiden name may have been Jebson, but I cant get any further without tracking down the parish records for Honley to see if I can find her baptism or a Drake-Jebson marriage. I've never found her with her parents so I can only assume they both died when she was young - pre 1841. Ah well - just need to get up to Yorkshire some time! Glad to have helped, let me know about the marriage cert and witnesses etc though - could be pretty interesting.

It was very common for illegitimate brides (and grooms) to invent a father for the purpose of the marriage cert rather than face the embarrassment of saying they were illegitimate. I've also seen the names of grandathers and stepfathers given as father. Gwynne
