Good advice. Another site to try is lost cousins they are compiling a list of mistranscriptions from the 1881 census. Other common errors first H added or missed . Old abreviations for first names. I recently came across Flora for Florence. Old place names for example Castle Town for Douglas.

Its a question often asked.....What is an alternative for this surname? I use this to find mine :) 1. Go to www.britishorigins*com This is a free search! (Replace * with a . ) 2. On the first page enter the surname you are interested in and click the drop down box....Select all variants (or close variants).....Then Search. 3. The next page will be headed 'Free Search by Name Results' 4. Look down the page to where it says...Search Criteria: Last Name (whatever you entered) + All Variants (or close variants). 5. Click on all (or close) variants. You should now have a list of variants for that surname. Chris
