My gr grandfather was born in Ireland in about 1850 according to the 1881 Census of England, but it doesn't record in what county. Is there any way of searching his Irish birth without knowing which county he was born in. He had an unusual surname of CUZICK. By the 1891 Census he had disappeared, his wife having died in 1890. He left his eldest son of 17 years to look after the other children of the marriage 7 in all, including a baby of 1. It may be that he went back to Ireland. Any help would be appreciated. |

Very interesting surname. Possibly it could have been Cusack at one time. I shall nudge some Irish tips threads for you. |

If you have his marriage certificate and know his fathers name, it would be worth having a look at the free search of the Giffiths valuation ( web address on 'Irish Tips' thread). The Griffiths covers the period 1848-1864 and is supposed to include every head of household. It would be worth having a look at the freesearch even without the fathers name to see if that name crops up in any of the counties of Ireland ~ unfortunately you'll have to go through county by county. I presume he is James Cuzick, living in Dudley? He is the only one I can see in the 1881 census with the exact spelling. As he was born after civil registration started in Ireland, you could ask your local LDS (Mormons Family History Centre) to order the civil registration film, for you to search at the LDS, or if you live near enough to London, you could go to the LDS at Kensington where they hold all the civil registration BMDs on film. |
