Thanks Reg, been doing more digging and the address was the original workhouse which become a military hospital in WW1. Copied following from website http://users(.)ox(.)ac(.)uk/~peter/workhouse/Guildford/Guildford.shtml 'After 1930, the workhouse became a Public Assistance Institution under the name St Luke's Home. The workhouse infirmary was taken over by Surrey County Council in 1930 and became Warren Road Hospital. In 1945, it became St Luke's Hospital, and in 1948 became part of the newly created National Health Service.' Looks like I'm unlikely to find out full name of his mistress (sorry 'Lady Friend') T.O.R.

Update - after posting message decided to Google the address. A personal webpage (I found) suggested that it could have been a military hospital. Therefore Great Grandfather could have been taken ill elsewhere and eventually died in hospital or the webpage viewed could be wrong. Would a civilian have been taken to a military hospital? If so would records still exist and if they do would they be covered by 75 year closure rules?

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can find out who lived at a particular address in 1942? Don't want to post full address as I could cause offence to someone - my greatgrandfather died at this address, which at the time was occupied by his long-term 'Lady friend'. I live in the North west so a visit to Woking records office is not feasible. Any other suggestions appreciated
