Hi, I have a Phineas Fox b.1820/1821. How do I go about finding out who his parents were? Is it possible to find other info on the net before the 1841 census or do I have to get his birth certificate. His place of birth is given as Dewsbury or Leeds (Batley) depending on which census I check. Thanks :-)

He was born before national registration in 1837 so his birth will be in a parish register. You need to have a rough idea where he was born and therefore which church he was christened in. Some parish registers have been indexed but many haven't. If you post anything else you know someone a bit more knowledgable than me may be able to help. John.
