Orangeman From Cork

My Great Grandfather Michael Murray was born circa 1838/42 in Cork, Ireland. He had moved to the east end of London by 1867. Family legend has it that he was an Orangeman and always took part in the Orange Day marches in the east end. What confuses me is that I would have expected him to come from Northern Ireland to be an Orangeman. Does anyone have any idea why he came from the south and yet supported this cause? Also are there any records or information on Orangemen parades etc in London?

Hi. Unsure of the marches in London but there are to this day Orange lodges in the South of Ireland. It's Christian based with Protestant links and also a Royalist supporting organisation. Hope this helps. Janet

Not everyone in the North is Protestant and in the South Roman Catholic. Until 1921, Ireland was one whole country, rather then partitioned into Eire and Northern Ireland. my grandad marched with the orange lodge,and he was from cumbria,also my adopted grandfather and he was from liverpool.xxx

Thanks for all your comments and ideas. I plan to contact the Orange Order in England and see if they hold any old records.
