Francis Farish was born in Cumberland c 1866 and I have him on all the censuses except the 1901. I'm not sure if he is hiding, or whether he is genuinely not there, but I know he must be somewhere because he married in 1902 - so he's not dead! In 1891 he was described as a marine engine fitter so I'm wondering if he was at sea in 1901. Would a marine engine fitter go to sea? Could he have done a turn as a ship's engineer? Does the census cover the Merchant Navy? Anybody got any ideas? Thanks in anticipation Sheila |
