I kow this is similar to another post but when applying for a birth cert, do you need the persons permission if they are alive. I am sure my gran wouldnt mind but i would rather not hassle her as she is 83. If i approach the bmd place for her cert, would i need to know her mothers occupation etc or would simply the reference no be sufficient? I know this query probably seems basic but i am new to this. Also, regarding the dates that my bmd have not yet transcribed, can i still obtain the cert by another means if i know some basic details? Thanks in advance

Anyone can apply for anyone else's birth certificate. You can apply for it from the GRO or from the relevant register office.

Does the same go for marriage certs/death certs?

Well I wouldn't worry too much about applying for a death cert for someone still alive.... :o)

My mum went to get a copy of my birth certificate yesterday and had to show no ID whatsoever!! All she had to do was tell them my date of birth and her maiden name and they produced it there and then. Although I needed the cert so I'm glad they did it, it did worry me slightly that any tom dick or harry could stroll in and get my birth certificate! Sam x

All certificates say on the bottom 'This certificate is not evidence of identity'. Kath. x

I know Kath, but most places take no notice of that and do accept them, hence why I needed a copy of mine! Sam x
