Hi - am wondering if anyone knows of which part of Tisbury was/is Linley in - I've tried Googling but haven't come up with anything significant. Can't find it on any map of Wilts that I've seen either. Anyone heard of it? Was it anywhere near West Hatch area of Tisbury? Grateful for any help - thanks! |

There's this one Tisbury, Wiltshire Built by John, Lord Lovel, in the late 14th century. Five-sided tower around a central courtyard. Large hall unusually provided with large windows on the outer wall, a sign that Wardour was meant as much for prestige as for defense. Tisbury, Wiltshire, England, SP3 6RR Location: 3 m NE Shaftesbury, off A30 Website: Old Wardour Email: customers(@)english-heritage (.)org.uk Phone: 01747 870487 |

Thanks, Karen. I did happen to spot the Coombs website but it doesn't give any info on whereabouts in Tisbury this place called Linley was. I'm trying to match up Tisbury births and deaths for my ancestors and have one Christopher Sanger of West Hatch Tisbury being noted as the father of several children during the mid 1700s, but there is just one child noted as the son of Christopher Sanger of Linley - and another child (whose name matches one of the baptisms) as an infant burial, father: Christopher of Linley. I'm trying to find ways of confirming that both these Christopher's were the same chap, just written down under a different part of Tisbury. Was wondering if Linley was a place actually in West Hatch or further afield. Grappling at straws to try to make sense of it LOL although my gut feeling is that this is the same father, since the name Christopher amongst the Sanger clan was very unusual. Sorry...am waffling a bit LOL Thanks again |

There is a place on the map now which is called Linley Farm - it's just west of Tisbury. In the past it might have been a small hamlet or village, which has now just become one farm. I have similar experience of this in my own family tree. It is about halfway between and slightly south of East Knoyle and Tisbury (not far from West Hatch) Kath. x |

That would probably be it as it when the cert was written everyone would have known it was a farm. |

Many thanks, Kathleen and Karen - I think that adds weight to my theory of it being the same chap moving house in 1733 for a few years from West Hatch to Linley. Knowing that they are that close to each other is a good sign. Thanks again girls! Much appreciated. |
