Just an enquiry anyone please. Can the full WW1 record of a person, only be obtained from Kew? Or is their an online service other than national archives? Cheers Margaret.

Many of the UK WWI service records were destroyed by enemy action in WW2. However, there are still large numbers held at Kew. Many Britons served in the Canadian Forces in WW1 and very full records are held in Ottawa. Basic details can be viewed online and there is also provision for odering complete sets of records online. Margaret, Interesting question! I had heard, I thought, that a project was in progress to digitise the collection. As you probably know, it's on reels of microfilm at the PRO. I cannot imagine how long this will take, so it might in fact be several years before we can access docs online. Meanwhile, if you have one or two soldiers who served with British forces and were discharged before 1921, you could think about asking the PRO to look, copy and send you the appropriate files. Compared with travelling costs, this might be quite good value - the sum of £25 comes to mind, but someone else may be able to comment on that. Kind regards Annie
