Hi Does anyone have any useful tips on trying to find relatives born before 1800? I have traced my Great Great Great Grandfather through the 1841 census, he was 70 years of age at the time and was living in Whitechapel and working as a basketmaker. it states he and his wife Ann were not born in the county. Any good ideas of where to start to find out the place of birth?

Have you checked to see if either him or his wife were on the 1851 census? I would also check whitechapel records in case they baptised any children there or even married there. Otherwise you have a big problem - it depends how unusual the surname is.

I have been looking for a person on the 1841 census not born in the county in question although I know her maiden name don't think I will ever find out where she came from Margaret

Have you tried the LDS site (Church of Latter Day Saints -- the Mormans)? I was able to find births, marriages and deaths in the mid 1970s Scotland through them. Try LDS+genealogy. If that doesn't work, let me know through another message and I'll dig further. Linda
