GRO INDEX ONLINE FREE The Microfilmed GRO indexes can now be searched online for free . From Sept 1837 till 1983 is now searchable http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx At the moment i is a 'beta' version, but it is free so just be patient and enjoy it. I am sure all the 'snags' will come out and be repaired eventually! Please note that these are original images and have not been transcribed or surnames digitalised in any way, it is exactly the same format as with 1837 online where you must PAY to see an image. Description: 'On 1 July 1837 a civil registration system for births, marriages and deaths was introduced in England and Wales. Registration was undertaken by civil registrars who reported to the Registrar General at the General Register Office (GRO) in London, now part of the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Copies of anyone's birth, marriage or death certificates can be obtained by the public. They are vital to family historians because of the genealogical information that they include.' (Mark D. Herber, Ancestral Trails, Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., 1998) Since the original birth, marriage and death registers are not open to the public, getting access to the information on one of these certificates is done by first searching the national birth, marriage and death indexes, that have been created by the GRO for this purpose. The indexes for the three events are each divided into quarterly volumes, with the names for each quarter listed alphabetically. Once an entry in one of the indexes is found, you are then able to use that information to order of copy of a death, marriage, or birth certificate from the GRO/ONS. The other information that can be obtained from the index includes: Year Record type ( Birth, marriage or death) Quarter (March, June, September, and December) District (each county in England and Wales was divided up into registration districts) Volume Page number Note: Names were entered into the volume of the quarter in which notification of the event was received, not necessarily the quarter in which the event actually occurred. Until 1866, most of the indexes were handwritten, which makes them sometimes difficult to read. To browse through the GRO indexes use the following links which are much better than doing a 'search for surname' believe me! births http://content.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/list.aspx?dbid=8964 marriages http://content.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/list.aspx?dbid=8965 deaths http://content.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/list.aspx?dbid=8966 _________________ |

Thank you Alex and James. The page won't load for me and it is SO frustrating. I've contacted Ancestry about it and am awaiting their reply. Hopefully I can now find out if this was my Grandfather's first wife. |

It is my Grandfathers first wife. I am so pleased to find her. She died in 1936 in Brentwood Mental Hospital and I have always wondered about her. She had such a tragic life, struck down with mental illness at a young age and dying at 36. RIP Beatrice A Archer nee Waters 1909 - 1945 |
