How can I find my ancestors workplace? (Potter)

My greatx4 grandad was an earthenware potter, along with his son. I'd love to find out if any of their produce still exists...was it well known? How could I find out who they worked for? |

Where did he live? Have you tried googling the county and 'potteries'? |

Hi there I'm no expert but I would imagine you would need to look at the local history of the town where he lived and see if was known for pottery of any kind. I would think many towns had potters of various descriptions in the 19th century. If it was a town famous for fine pottery some potters left a mark signifying his work so you are now in the antitique world and would need specialist reference books. Hope this helps Brian |

If you know what area they were in you could ask the local archives if they have had any companies deposit any of their records. Worth a try. Pauline |

Russell's Pottery, Holbeck, seems to have operated from about 1791 and closed in 1878. Situated in West Field Close, West of Meadow Lane. The local museums may have more. Denis. |
