Can anyone tell me what The Ancient Order Of Forresters is or was ? My Granda was presented with a clock from them in 1937. The plaque reads ..to Brother J Miller D.C.R. Any ideas? Maureen

It was a friendly society, or one of the 'clubs' - there were a range of them. In my village it was the Ancient Order of Shepherds. You paid a small weekly sub and they helped you out if you were poorly and couldn't work - on the club. The Shepherds had an annual feast day, which all members of that branch attended. Meeting in the morning, march round the village in your sash and hat, followed by church service, a lunch, sports for the children in the afternoon. Your relly was probably a branch secretary or perhaps a paid official by the 1930's. Jay

As far as I know the Foresters still exist. Someone I knew at work was a member in the mid-1970s. I think they issue insurance policies among other things. The Oddfellows is a similar organisation. John

Thanks for your replies. I thought it must be something like the Freemasons or Buffs as my Granda is called Brother Miller on the plaque. Maureen
