free reg is not part of Ancestry, it is a site which is putting parish records (births marriages and deaths) on the internet, buit it is only just starting to be of use //www.familysearch*org/Eng/Search replace the * witrth a dot is the IGI This has the 1881 census for free, also lots of parish records to search. Be careful though, most records are taken from films of the original parish records, they are mostlly fine, but some are submitted records. this means they have been put there by people who have found the info for them selves, sometimes it is fine, often it is gibberish Also if you are just starting out, this may be of use to you To find a GRO reference http://www*ancestry*co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx replace the * with dot This is the address for the Ancestry website. To look up census details on ancestry, you have to pay, but you can look up the births marriages and deaths for free, all you have to do is register. There is a full easily searchable index for 1984-2004 There is a partial index for 1837 -1983, this would always be your first port of call because it is searchable by name so quicker, If you are lucky you might find the person on that, but despite what it says the deaths have only been transcribed to about 1910ish,some of the older records are not transcribed either. So sometimes you will need to search the complete indexes for 1837-2003, quarter by quarter until you find the person you are looking for Of course although bmd's were supposed to be recorded from 1837, it wasn't strictly enforced until 1875, so some events were not registered, so bear that in mind if you are looking for earlier records. This will give you the year, quarter, registration district and a GRO reference and from that you can order the certificate . To order the certificates which cost £7 http://www.gro.gov*uk/gro/content/ replace star with dot The shortcut to ordering certificates on line is at the bottom of the page Linda

Thanks Linda, I have had a look on the mormon site previously as this is where i found quite a few of my Grandmother's ancestors. Currently searching my Grandfather's ancestors which is proving a lot more difficult. I am a member of ancestry but need to renew membership as it expired today, so did'nt know if free reg was part of that. Ordered birth cert last Tuesday for my G Grandfathers Father, however still waiting forthat to arrive, which will hopefully give me some more clues. Do you know where is free reg currently up and running? Julie x
