Hi all I have a Frederick Lewis (aka Lewis Frederick) NURSE b 1842 in Brightlingsea. Married to Elizabeth. Occupation baker/confectioner..... I also have him down as died March Q 1888 aged 46 in Tendring district (everything fits). I received a communication yesterday from someone who 'found' a Frederick and Elizabeth Nurse (bakers) in a 1910 London Trade directory. Has he come back to life, or is she mis-informed (and I can't ask as the writer of the document is dead). Peter |

Hi Peter, The name Nurse is not that unusual and neither is frederick or elizabeth. Just doing a quick reference check found at least 6 marriages between a frederick nurse and elizabeth from 1850-1910, two of these were in the London area. It may just be a coincidence???? Suzanne |

He married Elizabeth Ann Lapage 19/7/1863 Children:- Sarah Ann (Colchester 1867), Ada (1870-died71 Colchester), Louisa Maria 1873(St Geo Hanover Sq), Annie Agnes 1877(Pimlico) and Ethel Beatrice (1879 Brightlingsea). So he went from the colchester Area to London and Back to Essex. There aren't any others in Essex of the right age for the 1888 death to be anything other than his (I think) but to suddenly be told that Frederick and Elizabeth Nurse are bakers in 1910 seems like a coincidence - I suppose the easiest way is goung to be finding Elizabeth as a widow in 1891 (but I would prefer 1901 as well in case one is an error!!). Or are there other Frederick and Elizabeths in London who are baker's in 1901 and where were they born?? Peter |

I wonder if the widow or a son carried on the business under the original name after the death of Frederick, hence the trade directory entry. If Fred was only 46 when he died his widow could have carried on trading for another 20 years. After all, W H Smith is no longer alive, yet the shops continue under his name! |
