I was considering paying for Ancestry ..... but is it really worth it? I would appreciate your opinions.

John Charles I wouldn't be without Ancestry. It is great for census and even though their transcriptions are a bit offbeat at times, one learns to search in different ways, eg. a friend had looked for someone for many years on 1851 census, regularly travelling to London to trawl through census of places she thought someone may live. As you can imagine, this was really time consuming and with no good result. We knew where and when Sarah was born,- a little Sussex village,- and just searched on that. We didn't even put a surname incase she had remarried. She was found in Westminster via Ancestry in just a few minutes. Gwyn

Hi, I had previously had a free trial with Ancestry and cancelled after the 30 days was up. Basically, from my experience if you have had an Ancestry trial or been a member before they won't let you do another free trial. I just signed up for another month. This may work out more expensive in the long run, but I'd rather try it this way for a couple of months then subscribe for a year if I find I am using it a l lot.

I agree, I think Ancestry wont let you do another free trial if you've already done one - so unless you sign up with a new email address and different card details I dont think you could have another free trial. I defintely think Ancestry is a top site, depending on how engrossed you get with family tree, a subscription is well worth the money, especially when you think about how much it would cost you if you were doing pay per view credits. Luckily last week I won a prize through Your Family Tree Magazine for a years free World Deluxe membership on Ancestry and as I was already a UK member I got upgraded - which gave me an extra month free so I now have 13 months free. Saves me a LOT of money and makes it all feel so much nicer!! I use Ancestry pretty much everyday, not just for myself but to look up things for other people to help them out, and as a paid researcher for other people. Its a goldmine of information and well worth the subscription if you use it a lot. Alex

But the BMD & the 1881 & 1901 census' are free anyway.

Earlier census can take you back into the 1700s. I have a Jane JONES b. abt 1807 I had an idea which one she might be from parish records but as the parents weren't very original with names and named her siblings Mary and William, I couldn't easily establish Jane's parents for definite. .... Forgot to mention, they moved out of county too. With the help of the earlier census I found Jane's husband and son with Jane's parents, confirming the link. They were dead by 1881, so I wouldn't have been able to make the link without Ancestry. Gwyn

I bought the Who do you think you are family tree maker and got a one month free trial for Ancestry with it. I used it so much in that time that I knew I couldn't be without it. However, I didn't want to pay the £9.99 a month to continue it, as it was much cheaper to do the £70 for a year (saving £50). It really has been worth every penny. I use it daily and have found out so much information from it. Prior to that I was shelling out for pay per view which was working out really expensive.

Yeah I was, I did an online survey for them - as I am signed up to their forums. I totally forgot about doing it and that all entries were put into a prize drawer. Then I got a phone call from the magazine to tell me and I was really surprised!!! I was a bit worried that Ancestry wouldn't upgrade me as I already had a membership as normally these kinds of things appeal more to people who have never joined ancestry, and the woman at the magazine (a lovely American girl called Morgan) offered me the other two prizes - one was £30 worth of old maps on CD and the other was a £25 voucher for familyrelatives.org but I decided to stick with the Grand Prize.... a lot more handy for me! And Ancestry sorted it all out for me the other day and so now I have full access to everything for free for 13 months! Really glad I did that survey - only took 5 minutes out of my day and it was certainly worth it! Alex
