Can anyone help me track down my ancestor John Ruxton Brown? I know he was born around 1814 -1816 in Scotland. I have this information from the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses, when he was living with his wife and children in London. On the census he is listed as plain John Brown, but his middle name is given on his wedding certificate and his daughter’s birth certificate. From his wedding certificate I also know his father was Robert Brown, a land surveyor. I have spent lots of credits on Scotland’s People looking for the birth of a John Brown! Obviously there are loads, and I have no idea whereabouts in Scotland he was from. I assumed his middle name might be his mother’s maiden name, but I can find no record of a Robert Brown marrying a Miss Ruxton anywhere in the records, nor can I find the birth of a John Brown to parents of these names. Can anyone think of what I should do next or have I come to the end of the line for him? It will be a shame if I have, because unlike the rest of my rabble he seems to have had an interesting career in the Woolwich Police, rising from constable, to inspector and finally “superintendant of labour” - whatever that might be. Any ideas much appreciated. |
