hi all could you help with the conflicting names i have on certificates please. confusion is over my grandads father. grandad birth cert harold joseph beatty, teignmouth devon, 1917 father = john beatty - private northumberland fusiliers mother = annie elizabeth beatty formerly west great grandparents marriage cert 1904 john beatty and annie elizabeth west john beatty's fathers name = William Edward Beatty nan and grandads marriage cert 1940 harold joseph beatty and agnes gillman harold's father = george william beatty (deceased) - corporal devonshire regiment i don't know whether the info on the certs is wrong or i have the wrong certs. i have a feeling it is my grandads marriage cert that i have ordered the wrong one. could'nt find another one in the index though. my dad was born 1941 and i think they got married just before when my grandad was on leave from the navy. would appreciate any help thanks michelle

You first need to know the names of your grandparents as shown on your father's birth certificate. His mother's maiden name will be shown there too. Your father's entry in GRO birth index will also show this maiden name. Next you need to find a marriage certificate with those names. If it was not your grandmother's 1st marriage, your father's birth certificate should show her previous married name. You then check for a marriage for her in that married name to your grandfather. Always work backwards from known facts. Gwyn

Your grandparents' marriage certificate must be the right one, since you know their names for sure. The birth certificate that you have could be the wrong one, or the father's name could be wrong on the marriage cert. It may take a bit of research to work out which, though... Kate.
