I am trying to find my great-grandma Nellie Everest, who I believe was born about 1886 in Edenbridge Kent. I found her on the census in 1901 working as a servant, later I found her marriage entry for her and my great-grandad and I found her death certificate for 1955. I can't however find a birth certificate. I have found an ellen everest who was born in edenbridge in 1886/1887, but no Nellie. Is it possible that she could have changed her name all those years ago. I know I can confirm who she is from her marriage certificate, but I just wondered in those days could she have changed her name or is there another reason she hasn't a birth entry. Any help would be appreciated.

Nellie was/is a pet name for Ellen so it is probably the correct one. If you send for the certificate, ask that they check the father's name - that way it will only cost you £3 if it is wrong. Sam x

Could she have got married under a pet name though, as Nellie is the name on her marriage and death certificates? Thanks for the help

My aunt nell/nellie born 1898 was in fact Ellen so nell often used as a shortened version

yes its poss she was always known as nell/nnellie so that what is on other certs. people often misunderstood what was being asked when they registered things. for instance my paternal gran was Emma Anne but her second hubby called her Annie. when he registered their eldest daughter in 1911 he put mums name as Annie cos that was what he called her. Had I not known differently would have chasing a needle in the proverbial!!
