If someone died at sea...?

I have been told that my G. Grandmothers brother was a Captain of a Merchant Navy ship,That he died at Sea from Colera somewhere off the coast of Freetown Sierra Leone. He was born c1822 so have no birth cert, but have his marriage cert for 1853 and a Son was born 1858, so i know he must have died 1857 onwards. Has anyone any idea where the death would have been registered, would they, in those days kept the body until the ship reached a port - especially from what he died from, or would he have been buried at sea and the death registered in the nearest port or when it got back to its home port?? I have traced his wife from 1861 census onwards to 1901, living the whole time in Greenwich so maybe thats where the ship sailed from. maureen |

His death would have recorded in the ships log and on completion of the voyage a record would have been put in the Marine registers, you can a copy if you know approx which year.It happened for my grandad in 1910 when he was lost overboard on route from Australia to Bremen. he was merchant navy too. He probably would have been buried at sea. Have a look at the marine deaths on 1837 online |

Maureen with a bit of luck once you have found his death ref and you get the cert which will be a copy from the marine registers then you woill know the vessel name &&& you may get the ships log from Kew. I DID!!!. lots of the old merchant navy records are now held in the University of Newfoundland but if there was an unusual event like a death then the logs are still held at Kew. |

Shirley I know i am probably being a bit thick, but - where do i find Marine deaths on 1837, i have had a look and all i can see is the normal lists, looked under Occupation and Directories even Military but cant seem to see anything Maureen |

they semto have altered the layout put his name in and several hits will come up including marine indices. then you can choose which to view |

Maureen, it is quite likely that he left a will, so if you can search through the National Probate Calendar you might find details of his death in there. Kate. |
