Army help please

I have a James Ogden that was in the army about 1837 to 1855 have can i find out where he served and which regt he was in have them in Stafforshire 1851 census but cannot find them in 1861 any help please Valxxx

Hi Reg he was born in 1820 Kerkham Lancastershire he was a officer, wife was from Sussex children born London, Nottingham, Staffordshire and Wales thank you Valxxx

Val, You need more info before any progress can be made. Is there more detail on the marriage cert? Have you got a death cert? That sometimes states Regiment, especially if he was an army pensioner. If you could manage to wheedle out the regiment from available sources (certs, censuses) it would be much easier ... but I guess you know that! The good news is that if he was an officer, you are more likely to find more info at Kew than you can on ordinary soldiers. I had a quick look at the National Archives catalogue, whilst there are James OGDENs listed, the dates are all wrong - too early. Regs Annie

The one born Kirkham who is in Trentham Staffs in 1851 is recorded as being an Officer of the Inland Revenue He was a taxman..........not a soldier. Apart from anything else, if he had been an Army officer, he would have given his rank...........not simply called himself an 'officer' Reg
