how do i find out a fathers name pre 1800s

Priscilla, if I were you I would start by looking up the actual parish register entry for the marriage, just in case it has any extra information. For instance, it will tell you the names of the witnesses, who may or may not be of some help. Then you will need to start looking for Thomas's baptism in the King's Lynn parish register. There are some online sites that could help, such as FamilySearch and the Norfolk Transcription Archive at http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/index.php If you find only one likely Thomas Kemp baptism, check that there is no corresponding burial entry (i.e. that one didn't die as a baby), and then you have to try to decide how likely that one is to be yours. The more extra information you can get, the more confident you may be that you have found the right one. If you find none, you may have to start searching the parish registers for the villages around King's Lynn. If you find more than one possible baptism for Thomas, then you have to try to work out which is the right one! That's where the fun starts! Kate.

I have the marriage date from (familysearch) Thomas Kemp married Mary Spencer 2 may 1814 in st Margarets church kings lynn. I have details of Thomas and Mary census etc. this is the first pre 1837 search so I don't know what I am doing or were to go I have been trying to locate a birth/christening. Thomas gave his place of birth place as (lynn norfolk) on every census return Thomas lived in fincham

Hello Priscilla Where have you searched so far ? It is possible that there could be some info. available on www.familysearch.org. Or perhaps Free Cen site. What are the names and dates that you specifically have and also need. Jimbob

Hi There, Can anyone help? My Mothers 3xgrandfather married in kings lynn in 1814 I am trying to find out what his parents names were. Is their any way of finding out? thanks priscilla
