I hope someone can help. I am trying to what the name Jim and Uben can be short for, if any. Thanks in advance

Jim is short for James. I haven't heard of the other name before. Kath. x

Uben sounds German to me. Where did you see it? Jennie

I've not heard of Uben.... I can only guess at Reuben. I have seen Jim as the registered name, although I agree, it's usually the shortened form of James. Gwyn

Thanks to you all, I have found a family on the 1901 census I believe to be mine but on there is two extra name's Jim and Uben. The good news I have a James in my records for the family so that is that one sorted. Uben is a different matter could it be a mis-spelling for Herbert or Albert?

Melvyn Have you actually looked at the census image yourself, or did you take the name from the transcription? I always look at the image as some of the names have to be seen to be believed!! Jennie

It does seem to say Uben, but as he is age 16 have you found him on the 1891 so you could compare names? Also have you looked for his birth, Somerset reg? Jennie

Melvyn

Melvyn Report 17 Sep 2006 20:45

I can not find him on any other census that is the reason why I think it has been mistranscribed. I did not know about somerset reg

I've just found b reg on freeBMD for an Albert Edward U Channing Dec Q 1883 Taunton reg district. It's probably too early for your Uben but wonder what the initial U is for? Jennie

Hi Jennifer, If I was there I would kiss you. xxxxxxxxxxx You have hit the nail on the head Albert Edward Channing is the right one, I never knew about his third name

One thing I didn't mention so I didn't confuse things. There is another birth with the same name in the previous quarter. It obviously couldn't be the same parents so if it isn't just a transcription mistake it might be a cousin. Please don't assume I've given you the correct one, I would hate for you to go down the wrong line. As to the kiss, I'd rather have a cup of tea!! Jennie I've just looked on Ancestry and both births are there 1883 Sep Q Taunton 5c 318a and Dec Q Taunton 5c 341 - very strange!!

On the 1901 census, Uben is the son between Ethel and Jim. On the 1891 census, the son between these two is called Herbert. For 1891:- Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 1876; Folio 17; Page 28 Kath. x
