Ive been searching for the marriage of a William Teer (Teare) and Lilian Elizabeth Schofield Taylor. Their first child was born 1891 ( Have cert ). 3rd child b. 1897 ( have cert ), Last child c.1904. have found them in 1901 census and earlier. William was b. c 1861 Lillian b. c 1871 Both Mancester. My problem is that for all my searching I only find one William and Lillian marrying in 1915. Someone suggested that they didinet marry till then, cause a previous spouse was still alive. This made sense so I ordered the cert ( all the way from Australia and got it in record time I might say ). The cert says that Will. was 23 and Lill. 21. Could they lie about their ages???? Or would they have eloped...If so where and would there be a record? I heard once that Gretna Green, Scotland was a good place for people to elope. Jackie |

Jackie, Are you sure the 1915 certificate relates to the right people? ie are the right father's names cited? Have you found them in 1891? This whole thing sounds odd to me! Regs Annie |

... and did you spot the William S TEER on 1901 Census aged 9 in Salford, Parish of Broughton? He'd have been the right age (ish) to marry Lilian in 1915. There are also TAYLORs in Broughton Parish. Regs Annie |

a) I have several 'married' couples in my tree for whom I cannot find marriages. Possibly they didn't marry, or if they did the copies didn't get to the GRO. b) people could and still do lie on certs, or the information is incorrectly recorded. But I think it impossible that someone could pretend to be in their early 20s in 1915 if they'd had a child in 1891. c) elopements sound very romantic - but why would they have gone to all that trouble? Have you asked the local register office if they can find the marriage? nell |

Hi Annie, Helen, and Kerry, I tend to agree with you that lying for cert would be ridiculous especially if you looked 40 ish. Gretna Green could be my best bet since Will used to trade British pounds there regulary, according to my FIL. Where would I find records there. BTW Im in Australia so cant exactly ask the RO.
