Lesley you can get them the same day in local Registry Offices, in Birmingham you wait about an hour. Georgina.

The General Register Office indexes are at the Family Records Centre in London, which also has all the censuses. You can order certs there, but you WON'T GET THEM same day. They take at least 4 days as they are generated in the GRO office in Southport. You can look at the GRO bmd indexes online free at www.ancestry*co.uk (replace * with .) and order online at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ Coming to England, I would recommend you do some research you CAN'T do online in Australia - ie visit relevant county records offices and look in parish registers. Depends what you want to find out, of course. As for touristy things, the FRC is in Islington. It's near Sadlers Wells and based in Clerkenwell, which still has a villagey atmosphere, nice church and the gruesom House of Correction, an underground prison.

Not if you order them from the main General Registry Office which is in Southport. you have to have their ref and order but they will despatch to you in Australia.Otherwise if you know the area you want you may be able to go to the local rester Office & they MAY!! (thats in Italics but cant type it as such)supply you while you wait, depends how busy they are

There are some counties like Cambridge where you can order them on interenet - site has more details than Ancestry. Jim
