My Grandfather served in WW2 from 39 until the end but after his death we realised we didn't have his service number. Is there anyway of getting it as I would like to be able to order his service record ? Regards Wendy |

I think you can find it from his medal card on the National archive site. They cost £3.50 to download. You can search by name. It should give some other details of his service career. Anne |

Hello Wendy As you are talking about WWII and afterwards you wont find any papers at the National Archives - they are all stored at Glasgow. A good place for you to start is this site: http://www.army.mod.uk/ If you scroll down the right hand side there is a panel headed 'Veterans' - within that list is Veterans' Agency, Medals, Pensions, Service Records and finally a telephone number to contact for any help needed. You may also find SSAFA are able to help, in the initial stages only, of being able to locate his army number and their website is: http://www.ssafa.org.uk You will find all the information you need to help you in your quest within these two sites. Should you need any more advice on where to look/what to do, please do come back and ask. Snowdrops |
