Estelle, the census can give wrong ages, sometimes simply because the enumerator misheard. Fitz did a thread that includes Polish research that you may find of interest. I'll give it a nudge for you. |

Oh, thank you all for being so helpful. On the 1901 census I have found them in Mile End. They have a son called Myer who is 23. I am presuming this is also Mark, but maybe the Polish version of his name - they came from Lodz in Poland. As you say, his family must know his age. When he married his wife was only 19. She got married a month after my grandma was born. It would make more sense if he was only about 28 as I did think a 16 year age gap was quite large. |

Have you found him in the 1901 census, if so what is his age then? Another consideration is the age of his wife, it was not unknown for an age to be adjusted one way or the other, usually to reduce an age gap between the couple. Jennifer |

The image for 1891 clearly shows his age as 13. It's entirely possible that he adjusted his age for some reason or other at a later stage in his life. Unfortunately, without a birth cert, you will have problems in verifying........either way. If anyone knew his correct age, it would be his parents...........and they would be unlikely to confuse a pubescent teenager with a fully grown man What does 1901 give for his age? Reg |

Yes, I have viewed the image and it clearly says 13, when I would expect him to be about 20. Very odd. I can only guess they just didn't know his real age. |

Hi, 0 and 8 are probably the easiest numbers to get muddled up. I talk from experience as a wages clerk and when handwritten its easy to get them wrong. Hope this helps. |

Have you viewed the actual image? Sometimes I've found that ages are not transcribed correctly on the index. Gwyn |

I have his marriage certificate and in 1904 he was 35. I also have details of his passage across to New York and in 1911 he was listed as being 40. They were Polish immigrants and are not shown on the 1881 census. In 1891 Marks Goldstein (GGF) is living in Hanbury Street with his brother Lewis and father Simon ( and the rest of the family). His father Simon was deceased when Mark got married. And also, when Mark went to NY according to the ships list he stayed with Lewis before he left. So, there are too many coincidences for it not to be him on the 1891 census. |

I wouldn't have thought the age would be 8 years out for such a young person. I have found older people with large age discrepancies. Do you have him in 1881/1901? Angela |

What makes you think he was born c1870? Have you any documents to back up the supposition? If you post the details, someone will double-check. Presumably, you have cross-checked with 1881 etc? Reg |

I have finally found out some potentially very useful info on the 1891 census. However, the age given for the person I think is my Ggrandfather is about 8 years out. They have him as being born around 1878 when I think we was born around 1870. Could the census be this wrong? Alot of the other info - his brother, father and place of birth all fit, so I am fairly sure it must be him. Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks, Estelle |
