I have a military family and 1851/1861 census returns show that five of their children were born in Kent, Devon, Ireland and Scotland but I cannot find any of their birth details on line! Any advice?

Birth registration wasn't compulsary (in England at least) until 1875 so maybe they were never registered. Sam x
