Hi Jennifer, My Hill family originate from Leicestershire (around Ashby de la Zouch) but by c1820 are in Stoke on Trent where most of them stayed. I know one family went to USA in 1880's, one son went to London and there is at least one that went to Birmingham. Of course there could be other branches and twigs elsewhere. 90% of the males in the family were plasterers, even the ones in USA. If it rings any bells let me know! Sam x

I've not had any trouble with my hot matches personally, with the exception as you say that they also give you matches from other countrys, and different dates to what you're looking for, I've had quite a few that I've made connections with and quite a few I haven't, sorry looks like I'm the odd one out here who's doing okay with them. it is easier to find matches if you search rather than wait for them to tell you that someone else has the same name. hope you work it out okay.

Sam, they have done something different this time round. I don't know exactly what, but it looks as if they now pick out names at random from your tree to find matches for instead of starting at the beginning of the alphabet every time. Kate.

Hi ya, To turn off hot matches go to my account details... you wil be prompted for your password. once entered scroll down to e mail preferances and untick the box where it says notify me by e mail of hot matches. that should do it hopefully.

Sam I don't know Hot Matches work but I know other people only receive As Bs etc but from the very beginning I've always had a variety and my names go from A to W. It is very annoying when you get 'matched' with someone from another county/country but I enjoy getting my hot matches as I have made some good contacts through them. Hope yours improve soon - that is if you stick with them!! Jennie xx

Hot matches are useless, in my experience........you're much better off doing a name search. I blocked hot matches almost as soon as GR introduced them............. reg

For months now, I've been getting matches starting with B and loads of Ann Unknown's. The main name in my tree is Hill so I have been waiting for the day when I finally reach the H's. What happened today? I get 4 pages for hotmatches all for the name Pointon!!! Where'd the H's go (and all the rest inbetween B and P) Does anyone know how they work and will I ever get any H's? Sam x
