Its not likely to help here, but a couple more tips. Some local registry offices have marriages indexed. google BMD to see coverage so far. Lost cousins is compyling a list of maiden names for people on the 1881 census. (You can help them along by adding your ancestors). |

Here's a possible. On the 1861 census there is an Ann Redwood born same date and place. If you look up a marriage for her in Tiverton there is one Mar Quarter 1862 5b 757. However the James on the page is on the index as Pinhorn. Its close to Pincombe and could have just been written down wrong and would tie up with the first child's birth. |

Lee, To help you narrow down to when ......It looks as though they were married on the 1881 and 1871 census. But the best advice is that from Kate a child BC would ensure you then find the right MC. possibly one of the children from 1881...... Name: Ellen Pincombe Year of Registration: 1873 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Tiverton County: Devon, Somerset Volume: 5b Page: 413 (click to see others on page) did have a quick look but couldn't see a MC in the index, as this is incomplete means you might will have take a look though the images. |

Lee, what you need to do first is to get the birth certificate for one of James and Ann's children (I am assuming they had some?) and that will tell you Ann's maiden name. Otherwise, if you find a marriage you will have no way of checking if it is the right one,and James and Ann were both very popular names indeed! Kate. |

What is the couple's name and where were they married - someone might be able to find for you. |

Before 1911 much of the marriage index has been transcribed. Therefore if you can find the husband's marriage record you can look up others on the page. There are normally four (2 men and two women) and so if you know the wife's first name you could find her maiden name. There are of course many transcription errors and so it is not always easy and of course, as has been said, to be 100% sure you would need the certificate. Rob |

What timeframe are we talking about? For English/Welsh marriages after the middle of 1911, the full Marriage Index on Ancestry gives the surname of the other party. So if you find Joe Bloggs in quarter 4 1920 at Preston 6a 250, it will give Flange as the spouse's surname. You can then search for Flange in the same quarter and you should find the matching record, which will give you the spouse's first name. For records prior to this you'll need the marriage certificate The Scottish records on ScotlandsPeople are recorded and indexed differently, and you can get more details, but the timeframe is different. |
