yes but still meant under 21. I know thats lots couldnt read or write but the vicar would require the parent to sign with an X and he would d then witness the X signature |

Yes, the parents would have to give consent, but I'm sure it wouldn't have to be 'written permission' in those days as a lot of people couldn't even write their own names!! Kate. |

I know someone who got a marriage cert and the Bride was only 14 she is down as a minor that was in the 1850s up until 1929 Girls could marry at 12 and boys at 14 with their parents consent after that they could marry at 16 |

Minor means under 21 and parental permission had to be given The parents didnt have to be witness's tho unless of course the bride or groom elected to have them. Would think that the parents had to give written permission to the church when the banns where being arranged. Church edicts didnt change much over the years and thats what happened when i married in 1957!!! You may find some porkies were told about being over 21 ,or 'of full age' when people wanted to marry but didnt get parents permission |

Hi. Can anyone tell me what age constituted a minor in 1840. Also, where a minor married, would parents be required to be witnesses or is their consent given elsewhere? Thanks Rob |
