Hello Well I found them in 1891 under Gudgen - with an Emma Brooks as a sister in law - so figure your Jane was Jane Brooks. If you want the census image, send me a message with your email address and I'll send it to you. Found a marriage of a Jane Arabella Brooks to a John Gudgin June Q 1879 Amptill 3b 607.And there is a birth of a Jane Arabella Brooks Dec Q 1859 Amptill (freebmd has mistranscribed it as Isabella but the image is really hard to read so I can forgive them!) the reference number is hard to read but may be 3b 352. Also in 1891 they live near a widowed David Brooks aged 66 who may be her father. A quick check of 1881 finds that Emma is indeed David's daughter and that John and Jane still live next door with their first child. David's wife is called Jane. There is a marriage in Sep Q 1849 with a David Brooks and a Jane Hyde in Amptill 6 21. So this is probably her parents. Had a little laugh to myself just now seeing Shillington mistranscribed on Ancestry in 1841 as Shitlington... nice. David is the son of a Cornelius and Mary. So I have him up through the censuses from 1841. (Although his father is down as John in 1841 but it may be that everyone just called him John as it was easier than Cornelius...) There is a baptism for David Brooks on 8th Feb 1829 in Shillington, son of Cornelius and Mary. And a marriage for Cornelius Brooks and a Mary Devricks on 26th Dec 1820 Shillington. I'll compile something for you if you want as I've found a fair bit of info for this family which you might find useful, so message me with your email address and I'll be happy to send it all on. Regards Alex

Montmorency Report 14 Sep 2006 10:25

Not an Ancestry mistranscription -- Shitlington used to be the name of the place. There was another one in Yorkshire, which changed itself to Sitlington. And another in Northumberland, which hasn't changed

Sorry Reg I hadn't had time to check all threads when I'd last posted on this one I certainly wasn't being rude. I have sooooo many leads to mine and my husbands family that I don't always know which way to turn first. Again I was not being rude just slow. Sorry
