I have recently found the grave of one of my ancestors and on his headstone it has his name George Wood followed by the initials MM. I have a feeling this may have been military medal? Any other suggestions. Would this have been normal to put it on a headstone in this manner. He was born 1885 and died in 1964 so he could have fought in the first world war? Help appreciated.

There is an award of a medal to Serjeant George Wood, Wiltshire Regiment in London Gazette of 9th July 1918. Can't see what it was. Jim

Thank you for all the messages, I looked on the National Archives web site and followed a lead of a George Wood serving in the Wiltshire regiment as it was the most obvious one as my George Wood was from Wiltshire but when I got to download it there was amiddle name of Thomas which my George was not born with, just double checked it on the BMD on Ancestry and he was registered as a straight George Wood. However any more help very gratefully received.Tina

Thanks to you for your replies. I have gone back to the Archives site and I think I have found him know serving in the Wiltshire regiment but I cant decipher what he actually got from this information. This is the first time I have seen one of these card things so am still wondering. It does look like it was a Victory and a Star or 15 star. Does that sound right. Will go back to Archives site as I know it has pictures and explanations of the different medals.
