On my grandmother's birth certificate it shows her place of birth as Union Workhouse, Extons Road UD or UP - any idea what the initials mean. It doesn't show her father. Any clues as to how I can find out who her father was? Or how I can find out who was at this Workhouse in the 1901 census. I'm new at this and any help would be appreciated.

UD = Urban District. If her father isn't named on her birth cert, her mother would have been unmarried.........or, at least, not married to the father Reg

The name is probably Elizabeth Lee. My Gran was born in the workhouse in Aug 1902, so there's a slim chance that Elizabeth (her mother) was in the Workhouse during the census.

No listing for her........unfortunately, she was probably sent to the Workhouse because she was pregnant and unmarried. Do you know when and where she was born? Or any additional info at all? Reg

Thanks for your help on this. My Gran (Edna Alexandra Lee) was born 24/8/1902. We always thought she was a Ketteringham but it looks as though her mother (Elizabeth Lee) married Mr Lee (name unknown) and had two children Ethel and Ralph but he died before 1901. She then married again in 1906 to John W Ketteringham. My gran was born somewhere in between. I don't know if there is any way of finding out who her father was, if it's not on birth cert. I am also struggling to find out what Elizabeth Lee's maiden name was. I think it might have been Rout. I can find a record of Edward Lee marrying Elizabeth Rout in 1891 but not much else. I think Elizabeth had a sister called Sally.

Is the name Edith a certainty? I ask because I've found these people in 1901.............
