1911 census is closed until 2012 because there is a 100-year confidentiality rule. If you want to know more you can google or put '1911 census' into the search box at the top of this message board. Unless of course you mean the Irish 1911 census, which is available but not yet online. |

Ireland, like any other country, is free to make its own rules regarding the availability of public records. In the case of the 1911 census it was decided to waive the 100 year rule given that so many of the earlier census records had been destroyed in 1922. Denis. |

The 1911 Irish Census is available for those from Eire or Southern Ireland. For Northern Ireland the census is as for rest of the UK, not available until 2012. Janet |

Don't know if anyones intrested in trying the petition thing again but this is the latest one --- please remember to confirm your email address though or your name will not be valid. ****Remove Star from Address**** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Northern Ireland both the 1901 Census and the 1911 Census was released in 1960; The Freedom of Information Act 2005 removed the restrictions placed on the release of information and the requirements of this Act are being ignored; Prior to 1911 the average release period for Census Returns was 80 years. So rather than just talking about it I have decided to take Action! We have set up a Petition to be submitted to the Government to see if we can get them to reconsider! Please do sign it at http://www.cookgenealogy.*com/phpPETITION/ and spread the word amongst other Groups and Forums and your Fellow Genealogists! |

Ann I think Lunar is talking about the 1911 Irish Census, the Northern Ireland part of it. Lunar The web address you have given is incomplete? Janet |

Ann , I am sorry but that is not correct. People were not told in 1911 that it would be not disclosed for 100 years. The 100 year rule was not introduced until 1966! Lunar is correct the 100-year rule was abolished by Schedule 5 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. It does not exist. No census prior to 1981 contained any mention of 100 years. Previous censuses were released early. The 1841/51 censuses were released in 1912 !! All the people who provided the information are dead. As to if the info is sensitive, well I can't see that it is, but that's another argument. Bob |

Sorry, I am still a little confused about the availability of the 1911 census for Ireland (ie including what is now Northern Ireland). As I understand it the National Archives of Ireland in Dublin holds the original 1911 census returns for all 32 counties of Ireland (ie including those parts still in the UK). These are readily available to anyone. The Public Records Office for Northern Ireland does not make available any information from the the 1911 census. As I say, that is my understanding. It might be useful to hear from someone who has more definitive information. Denis. |
