Hi Laura If you know enough, i.e names, when where born you could get there birth certs to find out parents names. It really depends what info you already know. If you post some info on here someone will help look them up in the Birth, marriage and death indexes or on the census, and then they can point you in the right direction from there. Simone x

Look on the 'getting started' section on the homepage of this site - scroll down to find it. Always start with what you know and work towards what you don't know. Use certificates to get information until you reach 1901 when you can start looking for people on censuses. nell

Laura There is a Frank W H Cripps born in Sep quarter of 1922- district Thanet, Volume 2a, page 1863. The record says his mother's maiden name is Harman. I'll se if I can find a marriage for Alice Harman to a Cripps. Was Frank the oldest child or where ther others. Simone x

If you've got your grandparents' marriage details (I mean you've actually found them in the FreeBMD index on Ancestry with the corrrect surname of the person they married) the details of place, date, volume and page number will enable you to send for the marriage certificate. That will give the names of their parents (your great-grandparents), and your great-grandmother's maiden name. That way you'll learn what Jerry Cripps really was called and what his wife was called before she got married. And then do the same for the other set of grandparents. Getting the certificates is the key, and should be well worth £7 each, to get back one more generation.

Hi Laura Alice E Harman married a Frank Cripps in June q 1915, district Thanet, Vol 2a page 2888 maybe Jerry was a nickname The marriage cert will tell who both their fathers were, their ages at marriage, and you can then trace them on the census. Simone
