I am trying to look up a marriage on ancestry, but I only have the surnames of the bride and groom and a rough year date. Ancestry will not let me search using only the surnames, and wildcards for the christian names any tips on how to do this. Also does anyone know if it is cheaper ordering a cert from a local gro |

I would also suggest checking freebmd as you don't need first names for that. It could still be a bit of a drag though unless they are unusual names and not a huge year gap. As for the GRO or local register offices being cheaper, I think they are the same price but the local register offices tend to turn it around a lot quicker and are normally very friendly and helpful if you phone them with queries. |

Lynda, you would have to go through the GRO indexes quarter-by-quarter as neither ancestry nor FreeBMD have online name searches for the 1960's. It would be worth looking on Staffordshire BMD or West Midlands BMD, though, I'm not sure if they cover the 1960's yet. Try www.ukbmd.org.uk to get to them. Kate. |

The 1960s are not transcribed on FreeBMD so it is a case of trawling through the complete indices. Beat me to it, Kate |

Sorry, didn't realise you were after a more recent entry. As Kate says, it is a long slog looking through the indexes, for both surnames, until you find 2 with matching volume/page entries. I have done this for several rellies, not too bad on less common surnames, you should be able to search 10 years worth in under an hour with a broadband connection . |
