A few years ago I found my GG Grandfather John Wright Garside c 1840 who married twice on both certificates it states father Thomas Garside. He also had a brother Frederick c 1838 who gave him father as Thomas. On the 1881 census there is a Mary Parkinson living with him, listed as his Grandmother, but looking at the age gap between herself and John it has to be the children's grandmother, ie his mother. The first I found on the census of him was in 1871, 41 to 61 were illuding me until I joined Ancestry and found him on the 1851. His mother Mary had remarried a Samuel Parkinson. After going through the Marriage index and IGI the only marriage I can find is 13 April 1846. Her name on the certificate is Mary Garside Spinster and her father is a Benjamin Garside. She was of full age. I have not yet come across a bapt. for either John or Frederick so cannot confirm the father Thomas, but does this seem to be the correct certificate or not. One possibility was that Mary was not married when she had the children and that Thomas was her cousin so both had the same surname. Another is that again she was not married, gave her surname to the children and for some reason the children gave or assumed that their father was a Garside, Any input appreciated. |

My apologies. Sometimes I just type without actually looking at it from a 3rd party point of view. Andy |

1841...I think you'll find this is the family Alfred Garkide abt 1831 Lancashire, England Prestwich cum Oldham Lancashire View Record Ben Garkide abt 1791 Prestwich cum Oldham Lancashire View Record Ben Garkide abt 1828 Prestwich cum Oldham Lancashire View Record Frances Garkide abt 1826 Prestwich cum Oldham Lancashire View Record Frederick Garkide abt 1838 Lancashire, England Prestwich cum Oldham Lancashire View Record Hannah Garkide abt 1833 Lancashire, England Prestwich cum Oldham Lancashire View Record Lucy Garkide abt 1821 Prestwich cum Oldham Lancashire View Record Mary Garkide abt 1815 Prestwich cum Oldham Lancashire View Record Sarah Ann Garkide abt 1836 Lancashire, England Prestwich cum Oldham Lancashire View Record John Wrightington abt 1840 Lancashire, England Prestwich cum Oldham Lancashire On the image, John's name is actually Wright 'do', meaning Garside.........Ancestry transcribers must have had problems with it! It certainly would seem that Mary wasn't married when she had the children.........Thomas was probably a 'face-saver'. Reg |
