What ship?

I have a ancestor who is a sailor/mariner, but how do you find out what ship he was on? is there any sites you can go too to find out? Much appreicated. Yvonne

Hi He was born in 1812 and must of been a mariner, as on the 1841 census it says sailor then in 1851 he is a labourer in Liverpool, he came from Shoreditch in London and his name was James Phipps Much appreciated Yvonne
