I have on my grandfather's birth certificate that under Mother it said 'Sarah Buzzing late Coughlan formerly Martin'. Who died to make it late? I do know that Sarah was Coughlan before she married Edward Buzzing but don't know who the Martin is??? Any ideas? TIA Caroline

Martin is her maiden name and Coughlan her first married name.If you get her marriage cert it will probably say that she was a widow.

Ok Which marriage cert do you have - who is the husband? what is the bride's father's name, when and where was the wedding?

Right, I have the marriage cert of Edward Robert Buzzing (aged 24, bachelor) and Sarah Elizabeth Coghlan (aged 18, spinster) They married November 20 1887 at the parish church of St Stephens in Lambeth. Her father was William and he was a sailor. His father was Edward Robert Buzzing also and deceased. It all seems pretty straight forward but as usual, never is! LOL

Late doesn't actually mean someone died, its short for lately or latterly - ie she was lately known as Coughlan and formerly (before that) as Martin. Usually the reason is that there was a previous marriage but as she was so young and a spinster perhaps in her case she changed her surname as a child. Could be she was born illegitimately as Martin then later took her mothers married name of Coughlan, or that her mother was widowed and remarried and Coughlan was a step father's name.
