The file will be in GEDCOM format, and if you don't have genealogy software on your computer, it won't recognise the file format. Two options: get some genealogy software (Personal Ancestral File is available for free download from LDS site) or buy a commercial alternative (Family Tree Maker is the best seller, and not very expensive). With either, once you have saved the GEDCOM file to your computer, you import it into your new software (which will provide instructions of this simple step) and off you go. Your alternative is to open the GEDCOM file using a text editor. Use 'Open with' rather than 'Open', and name the editor you want to use. Unless you know the GEDCOM format backwards, and know how to extract just what you want, this is not a practical option. If you know how, then the chances of you not having genealogy software already are practically zero, so I only mention it at all because it can be interesting to see the underlying format of the files we take so much for granted!
